5. Chenab Rail Bridge

Highest Bridge on river Chenab

A 359-meter high railway bridge is going to be constructed on Chenab river in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in India. It is said to be the highest in the world breaking the current record held by 275 meters tall Shui Bai railway bridge in Guizhou province of China, and hence, is on the list of top 5 mega projects in India. Chenab rail bridge project is going to cost around Rs 1,198 crore and expected to be completed by the end of 2019. The project was initially intended to complete in 2009. However, due to stability and safety issues, the construction was made to halt. The contract has been given to Afcons Infrastructure Limited, a part of the third-largest construction group in India, Shapoorji Pallonji Group. The design of the connector is based upon a single arch steel bridge with approach viaducts on both sides.

4. Bharatmala Project

Bharatmala Project

Under the project, the Government of India has planned to link Gujarat to Mizoram with a national highway. Bharatmala budget is around Rs 14,000 crores and expected to get completed in the next 5 years. The Government has also planned to link the coastal states from Maharashtra to West Bengal by road network. In this way, the roads will appear like garland on the map of our country thus, the name has been given as Bharatmala to the project. The total length of the road is to be constructed under this project is 24,800km alongside India’s borders, coastal areas, ports, religious and tourist places.

3. Setu Bharatam Project

Setu Bharatam Project

Inaugurated with a budget of Rs 102 billion, the project holds the 3rd position in the list of top 5 upcoming mega projects in India. Setu Bharatam project aim is to reconstruct 1500 British-era bridges and also to ensure no railway crossing along the National Highways. A total of 208 railway crossing will be replaced by rail over bridges by the end of 2019. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has established an Indian Bridge Management System (IBMS) in order to carry out a proper inspection of all the railway crossings and bridges. The project will help to reduce traffic at the railway crossing and also reduce the number of deaths caused by railway accidents.

2.Sagarmala Project

Sagarmala Project

It was launched in Karnataka by Ministry of Shipping on 31st July 2015, with a total budget of Rs 7.9 lakh crore. Sagarmala project aim is to utilize India ’s long 7,500 km coastline and promote port-led development in the country. The Indian government has also planned to make inland waterways on rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Mahanadi. Sagarmala programme vision is to connect the road, air and rail transport to the ports easily so as to achieve an easy and economical way of transport. Under this project, six new ports are to be made in 5 different states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha and Karnataka. After it gets completed, the import of raw material and the export of finished goods will be easy and efficient. The project will help all the coastal states and the industries located in the states to grow at a faster rate.

1. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Shivaji Memorial

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

With a total budget of Rs 21,600 crore, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link & Shivaji Memorial has secured the 1st rank in the list of top 5 upcoming mega projects in India. After completion, the bridge will be the longest bridge in India with a length of 22.5km. Previously four proposals were rejected by the Maharashtra government for this sea link. The mentioned sea link will start from Sewri to Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva and will pass through South Mumbai and Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island. The project will reduce the traffic to a great extent as it will connect the Mumbai with its satellite city Navi Mumbai. The Central Government has also planned to build a grand memorial of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji in Mumbai. The project is expected to cost around Rs 3,600 crores and will take 4 years to complete. The memorial will consist of a grand museum of Maratha Kingdom, a hall, a big garden with the mighty Shivaji’s statue in the centre.
